Holiness is not Transferable

Have you ever caught health? Have you ever caught a cold? You can’t be healthy by being around healthy people and healthy things without actually doing the things required to make you healthy.

However, it’s easy to catch a cold. You don’t have to do anything but be around an infected person.

In the same way, holiness is not transferable.

Holiness is an inside job. It starts inside of us and then the fruit of all the seeds planted will reveal itself in due season.

Just because we go to church and do all the things, does not mean that we are holy or living right. Holiness takes more than checking off our holy to do list. Without a repentant heart, a right mind and a good attitude, we cannot please God.

The Psalmist David wrote in Psalm 51:16-19:

For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart— These, O God, You will not despise. Do good in Your good pleasure to Zion; Build the walls of Jerusalem. Then You shall be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness..

The bible says that David was a man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22), yet he wrote Psalm 51 after he committed adultery with Bathsheba. In this Psalm we notice a few things. First, David acknowledged his sin/faults. He repented and then he pleaded with God for forgiveness.

In Haggai 2:10-14 God tells Haggai to ask the priests to rule this matter and the Amplified version interprets it like this:

12 If a man carries meat that is holy [because it has been offered in sacrifice to God] in the fold of his garment, and he touches bread, or cooked food, or wine, or oil, or any [kind of] food with this fold, does what he touches become holy [dedicated exclusively to God’s service]?’”
And the priests answered, “No!” [[a]Holiness is not transferable.]
13 Then Haggai said, “If one who is [ceremonially] unclean because of [contact with] a corpse touches any of these [articles of food], will it be unclean?” And the priests answered, “It will be unclean.” [Ceremonial uncleanness, like sin, is infectious.]14 Then Haggai answered, “‘So is this people. And so is this nation before Me,’ declares the Lord, ‘and so is every work of their hands; and what they offer there [on the altar] is unclean [because they who offer it are unclean].

A lot of us are all guilty of thinking that the preacher is always talking about someone else, not us. But the bible advises us to watch and pray (Matthew 26:41) because in the last days it is possible that even the elect will be led astray or deceived (Matthew 24:24).

I mention that to say that it doesn’t matter who we are or what position we hold. In the same way that God is not a respecter of persons, neither is sin. We are not untouchable to the sins of the world. This is why we are to put on our armor daily and be careful not to think that we are above anything or anyone. We should pray to be transformed by the renewing of our mind.

All of these things cannot be done on our own. We need our Creator. He is the only one that can take all of our broken pieces and make us whole. But in order for Him to do that, we have to allow Him to come into our lives, give us a new heart and allow us to take part in His righteousness.

My prayer today is that we can all stop pointing the finger and come to a place of repentance and sincerely ask God to show us our faults and make us humble enough to recognize that we have all fallen short of His glory.

May we pray that God shows us the role we each have played in our piece of the puzzle and plead for His mercy.

May we ask that He cleanses us, and creates in us a pure heart and renews a steadfast spirit within us (Psalm 51:7-10).

Be encouraged!
Isaiah 35:8
A highway shall be there, and a road, And it shall be called the Highway of Holiness.
The unclean shall not pass over it, But it shall be for others. Whoever walks the road, although a fool, Shall not go astray.

Stay in Your Lane

2 Corinthians 10:13
We, however, will not boast beyond measure, but within the limits of the sphere which God appointed us—a sphere which especially includes you.

One of my favorite sayings is there is only one me! I don’t know how to be someone else. I can only be myself.

Have you been trying to fit in or fill another person’s shoes? As humans, we all want to be accepted and liked.

At some point we want to be recognized for our efforts and/or accolades. The problem with this mindset is that when it doesn’t happen, feelings get hurt and we begin to complain that others aren’t celebrating or recognizing our talent. Not only does this hinder us, but it is carnal. It is contrary to the spirit (Romans 8:6-7).This is why it is important to recognize when our flesh is getting in the way of what God has purposed for us to do.

God is intentional. Every gift He has gifted us has a purpose and is needed. Your gift may not be the most glamorous or applauded gift and at times you’ll find yourself alone with your talent but it is still a gift and it was given to you by God. When we measure ourselves up with others or when we try to make them understand what our calling is, we are making room for confusion.

In defensive driving, we are taught how to recognize potential hazards, avoid traffic crashes and avoid causing others to crash as well. Among many techniques we learn what the lines on the pavement mean, the different road signs and reminders to stay in our lanes. It’s impossible to stay in our lane if we are constantly fixated on someone else’s path or how they’re driving. We may even miss our exit.

In the same way, we are to stay in our lane and perform under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, in the area where God has called us. How can we possibly stay focused on God’s plan for us, if we constantly keep looking at and judging other people? Here are a couple of examples where Jesus is basically telling us to mind our business:

Matthew 7:3 – And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye?

John 21:21-22 So when Peter saw him, he asked Jesus, “Lord, what about him?” Jesus replied, “If I want him to live until I come back, what concern is that of yours? You follow me!”

In Hebrews 12:1 we read ..and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, this part states, ‘the race that is set before us’. It is so easy for us to get distracted or discouraged but we can’t run someone else’s race and they can’t run ours.

How do we even know which lane is ours and how do we stay in it? By keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus
(Hebrews 12:2). When we do this, He provides discernment and guidance and He orders our steps (Psalm 37:23). Consider this, only when Peter took his eyes off Jesus, did fear kick in and he began to sink. (Matthew 14:29-30).

Romans 12:4-8 encourages us to use our gift according to the grace given to us (verse 6). Now this does not mean that if we see a need we don’t help out. I personally know people that found their calling in this way, just by stepping in and helping out. Some people have multiple gifts and talents and they are also to use them accordingly.

The bottom line is that I can’t win or run your race and you can’t win or run mine. When we begin to compare ourselves, not only is it exhausting, but we spread ourselves so thin with all kinds of activities and commitments to the point that we don’t really make a significant impact in any of those areas.

I want to challenge someone today to ask yourself – are you operating as the best version of yourself, or are you failing at being someone else? I want to encourage someone to stay in the lane that God has created for you and don’t lose sight of the fact that we each have a specific job to do for Him.

My prayer is that we don’t lose focus or allow anyone or anything to cut in on us and make us lose sight of what’s really important. May we make up our mind to persevere until the end! You were running a good race. Who cut in on you to keep you from obeying the truth? (Galatians 5:7).
Be encouraged!
2 Corinthians 10:15-18
Nor do we boast beyond certain limits in the work done by others, but we hope that as your faith continues to grow, our work may be greatly expanded among you according to our limits, so that we may preach the gospel in the regions that lie beyond you, and not boast of work already done in another person’s area. But the one who boasts must boast in the Lord. For it is not the person who commends himself who is approved, but the person the Lord commends.

God Is Not Mocked

To mock is defined as to disrespect and ridicule in a scornful or contemptuous manner. When we read Galatians 6:7-9, we are quick to point the finger at unbelievers as the ones who mock God. But a lot of times, the most understated or toned down mockery of God comes from those of us in the church.

We are guilty of attempting to mock God when we hypocritically pretend to serve Him or pretend to be spiritual or holy but we are not. Inside we have not changed. Our hearts are still the same, deceitful and full of self.

Motives matter. When we do things out of self pride, so others can see how gifted and talented we are, when our motives are to impress people or to be right with men, applauded by them, we are robbing God of His glory.

We deceive ourselves if we think God cannot see our actions and behavior. We may be able to deceive people, but not God. In Revelations 2 and 3 in each letter to the seven churches, God says that He knows our works. God sees our heart and all that is in it – Psalm 44:21.

All different translations of Galatians 6:7-10 tell us the same thing. Here is ‘The Message’s’ interpretation or breakdown:

7-8 Don’t be misled: No one makes a fool of God. What a person plants, he will harvest. The person who plants selfishness, ignoring the needs of others—ignoring God!—harvests a crop of weeds. All he’ll have to show for his life is weeds! But the one who plants in response to God, letting God’s Spirit do the growth work in him, harvests a crop of real life, eternal life.

The bottom line is that we can never make a fool out of God.
If we think that we can sow one thing and reap another, we are attempting to mock God because the very essence of who God is, besides love, is a God of justice. A man will reap what he sows and in the end, every fruit will reveal the seed.

My prayer is that we examine ourselves and invite God to open our spiritual eyes so that we may see what is deceiving us and keeping us from fulfilling His will in our lives. May we ask Him to help us not do things out of vainglory or conceit but instead, may all that we do be to honor Him and that our motives and intentions always be that He gets all the glory.

Be encouraged!
1 Chronicles 28:9 …for the Lord searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever.

Acknowledging God

Proverbs 3:6
In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths

Have you found yourself feeling lost or with a sense of no direction or lack of peace? Proverbs 3:6 tells us to acknowledge God in ALL our ways, and He will direct our paths. If we want God to direct our steps, we need to learn how to continue to be mindful and acknowledge Him even in the middle of living. In the midst of distractions, work, family, issues, etc.
